Survivor Winner Accused of Tax Evasion Owes Triple the Prize

More than 25 years after winning the first season of “Survivor,” Richard Hatch is still entangled in a legal battle with the federal government over unpaid taxes on his prize winnings. The situation has escalated, with the government now claiming that Hatch owes more than $3.2 million, including penalties and interest, far exceeding the original prize of approximately $1,010,000.

The dispute took a new turn when the U.S. District Court ruled in favor of the government on March 17, stating that Hatch owes over $3,293,000 in federal income tax liabilities. This amount could increase further as it includes statutory additions from May 13, 2024, along with interest. In response, Hatch, who is representing himself in the case, filed an appeal to the United States Court of Appeals just two days later, on March 19.

Judge John M. McConnell, who presided over the case, stated that the judgment allows the government to initiate the Federal Debt Collection Procedure to recover the outstanding debt. This means the government can take steps to enforce the payment, potentially through the seizure of assets or other legal measures.

Did Hatch transfer property to avoid paying taxes?

The government has placed federal tax liens against two properties it claims Hatch owns in Newport. It alleges that Hatch transferred the ownership of these properties to his sister, Kristen Hatch, in an attempt to evade his tax obligations. According to the government, Kristen Hatch is merely a nominee for Richard Hatch, who is the true owner of the properties.

“The transfer of record title of the real properties to Kristin M. Hatch was done with the actual intent to hinder, delay, or defraud creditors, including the United States,” the government stated in its filing. This claim suggests that the transfer was fraudulent and aimed at avoiding tax liability.

Hatch has confirmed his intention to appeal the ruling, as reported by The Providence Journal, part of the USA TODAY Network. In a text message, he expressed confidence that the appellate court will deliver a “just outcome.” He added, “I have spent 25 years trying to do the right thing, and I remain committed to resolving this matter fairly.”

Who is Richard Hatch?

Richard Hatch, now 64, hails from Newport, Rhode Island. His victory in the first season of “Survivor” in 2000 helped launch the show into a cultural phenomenon and sparked the country’s fascination with reality television. Hatch became widely recognized for his time on the island, where he often appeared naked, making him a household name.

Despite his fame, the government claimed that Hatch did not report his “Survivor” winnings. In January 2006, he was convicted of tax evasion. As a result, he was sentenced to 51 months in prison, followed by three years of supervised release. Additionally, he was required to file amended tax returns for the 2000 and 2001 tax years and pay all outstanding taxes. However, according to the government, he failed to comply with these requirements.

After continuing to refuse to pay, the government filed a civil complaint in the U.S. District Court in Providence in September 2022. The lawsuit sought a judgment on unpaid federal income tax liabilities and the enforcement of federal tax liens against the two Newport properties it claims Hatch owns.
