5 Transformations at Costco in 2026
Costco has long been known for its bulk shopping options and member-exclusive deals. However, in 2026, the mega-wholesaler is taking steps to enhance the overall customer experience with a variety of new features and improvements. For those who have hesitated to join, this year may be the perfect time to consider becoming a member.
A Faster, More Digital Checkout System
One of the most anticipated changes at Costco is the introduction of a faster and more digital checkout system. Long lines have always been a common complaint among customers, but Costco is working to change that. In select stores, the company has already implemented “scan-and-go” technology, which allows items in a customer’s cart to be pre-scanned by employees. At checkout, members simply need to scan their Costco card at a walk-up kiosk to complete the transaction.
This process significantly reduces wait times and makes the shopping experience more efficient. Additionally, in 27 selected locations, Costco has rolled out an even more advanced system where customers can pre-scan items as they shop using the Costco app. Upon exiting the store, a QR code is scanned to verify purchases. If this pilot program proves successful, it could be expanded to all stores in the future.
Customize Food Orders Through the Costco App
Another major update in 2026 is the ability to customize food orders through the Costco app. Previously, customers had to place custom orders in person, which often required multiple trips to the warehouse. Now, many customers can order custom cakes and deli platters directly through the app under the “Warehouse” tab.
While this feature is currently available in select locations, it is expected to expand nationwide. Once fully implemented, customers will be able to customize cakes with specific sizes, colors, flavors, and inscriptions. Orders must be placed at least 72 hours in advance and can be scheduled up to two weeks ahead. This convenience is sure to make planning parties and events much easier.
Versatile Prepared Foods and Meal Kits
Costco is also expanding its selection of prepared foods and meal kits in 2026. While some customers remain divided on the quality of these options, the company is introducing a wider variety of meals and ingredients. For example, the Kirkland Signature BBQ Chicken Mac and Cheese with Bacon has become a popular choice for many shoppers. This take-and-bake meal includes shredded rotisserie chicken, bacon crumbles, and cheese, making it a quick and easy option for dinner.
In addition to ready-to-bake meals, some locations are now offering fully cooked, ready-to-eat options like flame-seared, chargrilled chipotle chicken. These seasoned chicken bags are ideal for those looking for a convenient, flavorful protein source.
Members-Only Food Courts
The food courts at Costco have traditionally been accessible to both members and non-members. However, starting in 2026, the company is working to enforce a members-only policy. In some locations, scanners have already been installed to require membership cards for purchases at the food court. While enforcement remains inconsistent, this change aligns with Costco’s business model of offering low prices through member fees.
This shift has sparked some controversy, but it makes sense given the cost of memberships. The basic gold membership costs $65 per year, while the executive membership offers additional benefits for $130 annually.
More Store Locations
Costco is also expanding its presence in 2026. The company plans to open at least 35 new stores in the coming year, with a goal of opening 30 new locations each year moving forward. These new stores will not be limited to suburban areas, as Costco is shifting its focus to urban centers to reach new demographics.
Some of the new locations slated to open in March and April of 2026 include Texas, Utah, and California. As Costco continues to grow, more stores are expected to open near customers across the country.
