For the Good of the Neighborhood: Macon-Bibb Breaks Ground on Affordable Housing in Pleasant Hill
After years of careful planning and preparation, construction has officially begun on a new affordable housing complex in Pleasant Hill. On Tuesday, local officials celebrated the groundbreaking ceremony for Pleasant Hill Landing, an apartment complex located in the Pleasant Hill neighborhood of West Macon. This development marks a significant step forward in addressing the growing need for affordable housing in the area.
For one longtime resident, this project represents more than just a new building—it’s a symbol of hope. Pinkie Lewis, a 87-year-old Pleasant Hill native, has lived in the neighborhood for most of her life. She grew up just a few blocks away from where she currently resides, and now she’s watching the construction take shape just a short distance from her home.
“It’s just been a nice neighborhood. And I love it,” Lewis said with a smile.
Lewis expressed deep pride in the community that has shaped her life. She hopes that the new housing complex will help maintain the neighborhood’s legacy by welcoming new families into the area.
“I just hope that this works out for the best of the neighborhood, for the good of the neighborhood,” she added.
The project is expected to cost $20 million and provide housing for 64 families. According to Mike Austin, CEO of the Macon Housing Authority, the groundbreaking ceremony marks the culmination of years of effort to address the high demand for affordable housing not only in Macon but across the state and country.
“Our goal is to make really good affordable housing for people who need it. The demand for affordable housing in Macon-Bibb and throughout the state and throughout the United States is an all time high,” Austin explained.
Austin noted that other affordable housing developments in the city are already popular, and he expects the same interest for this new complex. He estimates that there could be as many as 250-300 people on the waiting list once applications open.
“I would not be surprised when it’s all said and done that we have 250-300 people on the waiting list and that’s just not uncommon and it really speaks to the need,” he said.
Beyond providing affordable housing, the complex is part of a broader effort to revitalize the Pleasant Hill neighborhood. Natalie Bouyett, Executive Director of the Macon-Bibb Affordable Housing Fund, emphasized that housing is a crucial component of these revitalization efforts.
“We have the infrastructure in place, we have a lot of opportunities surrounding the area, we have great transportation lines, we have easy access to downtown, there’s a lot of job opportunities in the area and so really the missing piece is the housing,” Bouyett said.
Bouyett also highlighted how the project could bring more students to nearby LH Williams Elementary School and attract more businesses to the area through the complex’s retail space.
“If we can get more people coming back into this area, we can help improve our schools and the safety of the community and just provide even more healthy opportunities here,” she said.
For Lewis, the project is a source of excitement and hope. She plans to watch the complex rise from her front porch, keeping a close eye on the progress.
“I’m hopeful that God will keep me around to see it completely,” she said.
According to Austin, the project is expected to be completed within 12-14 months. He also mentioned that the housing authority will begin accepting applications for the complex in six to eight months.
